Use girlfriend’s credit score to qualify mortgage?

I have a stable career and good income but my credit is bad. Can we use my girlfriend’s credit score and my income to apply for a mortgage as co-borrowers?

When two people apply for a mortgage as co-borrowers the lender will use the lower credit score of the two applicants in determining their ability to qualify for a mortgage. So based on the information you provided, if you and your girlfriend apply for a mortgage together the lender will likely use your credit score. We provide a thorough overview of Your Credit Score and the Mortgage Process on FREEandCLEAR.  We also provide expert advice on How to Get a Mortgage With Bad Credit

If you want to use only your girlfriends credit score then she would need to be the sole applicant on the mortgage and she would have to generate sufficient income to qualify for the mortgage on her own. In that scenario you could both own (hold title) to the property you buy but she would be the sole borrower on the mortgage. If that is not an acceptable or feasible option then you should consider programs for credit-challenged borrowers such as the FHA Mortgage, Fannie Mae HomeReady or NACA mortgage programs. We also provide a summary of mortgage assistance programs on FREEandCLEAR.
